It's a Win: Evers 2 - A Brutalist Beacon for Students
"POLO and Baumans-Deffet's proposal, in which the extension is removed while retaining the external staircase, takes a very respectful approach to the existing building envelope and its brutalism. The intervention resulting from this demolition, with the integration of balconies and a cantilevered terrace, is assessed as very qualitative and stands out, while being perfectly integrated into the building."

The ground floor activates the public space with a commercial area and terrace along Eversstraat, while the student program is positioned on the quieter Wolstraat side, promoting a lively yet balanced environment. A key feature is the student foyer, located at the building's corner, overlooking a serene English courtyard, offering privacy and a green retreat.
Inside, the duplex-centered floor plan maximizes space and fosters social interaction. Double-height volumes and integrated collective spaces at the building's corners enhance both functionality and livability. These spaces benefit from bi-orientation and balconies, ensuring connection with the outdoors.
A standout feature is the transformation of the technical floor into a cloister-like space, maintaining the original crown structure while introducing a covered, outdoor area. This creates a unique environment where residential and communal areas coexist harmoniously.
Our design embraces the “Less is More” approach, emphasizing spatial generosity, sustainability, and urban integration. We’re excited to bring this innovative project to life and set a new standard in architectural design. Stay tuned for more updates!
