Each village core deserves comfort and appeal
Over the past years we have seen a renewed interest in our Flemish villages from various quarters. Writers, policy-makers, planners and designers have brought to life a refreshing and optimistic debate on a typology that some considered obsolete, ill-equipped to answer today’s challenges. At POLO Urbanism we believe in the transformative power of the small-scale village tissue, and find the timeless qualities of village life are ripe for a reappraisal; we do so through a radical but sensitive proposal that grows out of a particular context, injecting life back into the village of Steenhuffel.
From isolated enclave to embedded campus
rethinking VITO’s spatial infrastructure to support a future-oriented and resilient work organisation
Alliance-building propels spatial transformation
A labyrinthine ownership structure adds intrigue to the redevelopment of a large industrial site in Antwerp’s periphery. POLO Urbanism plays a proactive role in eradicating boundaries between plots and between the various stakeholders in a pilot project targeting urban transformation, economical transition and integrated soil remediation. It leads to a spatial framework that is more than the sum of its parts, conceived by a newly formed coalition of designers, developers, land owners and the city of Antwerp.
Empowering villages to develop advanced spatial policy
designing image quality guidelines to evoke a variety of enticing ambiences in a municipality in the Flemish countryside
Slow tourism safeguards natural assets
a spirit of critical regionalism leads to a sustainable settlement that builds on local knowledge
Gently eliciting a modal shift
In the Dutch city of Enschede a large plot of land is poised for a radical overhaul. Its scale and strategic location represent an opportunity to make a real impact on the city’s functioning. In close collaboration with the municipal administration, POLO conceives an ambitious urban plan that ties together disparate neighbourhoods and plants the seeds for a city-wide modal shift.
Consolidating public property for the common good
financial modelling and phased implementation strategies lead to win-wins in public-private development
